Today we spent time talking about why it is important to build a therapeutic alliance between patients and health care providers and how to do so. We were able to incorporate pharmacotherapy, cultural issues, stereotypes, socioeconomic concerns, challenges of forming connections and providing good patient care in a fast paced community pharmacy setting and many more important issues! It was great seeing the students get outside of their comfort zones and think about the so-called softer side of health care.
We revisited motivational interviewing and Dr. Abdelmageed and I even did a little bit of impromptu role playing. He played a patient who thought their medication was too expensive and believed that he was perfectly healthy until he got involved with the health care system. I was once again reminded of how important it is to understand patient perceptions before even BEGINNING talks of lifestyle modification and medication adherence.
What a great day! Already looking forward to next week...
