Great discussion today led by Dr. Hanson!
We tackled a lot of issues as they relate to patient care in general and underserved patients in particular. The title of this post is a comment made by Martrell about a patient case we discussed. Why is this patient not getting better? Why does she keep having recurrent heart attacks? As you can see in the picture of the board, we delved into the typical....adherence, missing meds...etc then went a little deeper into health literacy but most importantly the students were able to look even deeper and think past the "right drug for the right disease" and added the component of the "patient". What else is going in her life? Is she scared? Depressed? How do we feel about this patient? Are we frustrated? Is our frustration with her or with the situation? Let's address that thought of "what a train wreck" that pops into our heads and try to tear down those preconceived notions or prejudices that may impeded caring for this patient.
Therapeutic alliance is a concept that was central to today's discussions as we discussed various elements and factors that play into the formation of this alliance between the healthcare provider and the patient. From there we went into discussing different techniques for implementing change in health behaviors and how we must be conscientious of what else is going on in the patient's life that might impact our ability to provide a caring service.
Today's class was a lot of fun!
