In our last class we had a very important conversation about staying mentally, physically and spiritually healthy while caring for the underserved and vulnerable. We're driven to healthcare because of an underlying sense of altruism, selfless concern for the well being of other. That altruism is often intensified when dealing with all the challenges of caring for the vulnerable and underserved and one must pay close attention to how he/she reacts with that environment. You can easily get burned out, overwhelmed, exhausted and feel like Sisyphus rolling a rock up a hill only to watch it roll down to the bottom again. You must care for yourself. Know your limitations, respect your boundaries (yes, you respecting your own boundaries) and locate your happy place; the place to which you go to recharge. Most importantly, realize that you need not have control over everything and that you should control the pieces which you can to slowly work away the issues/problems facing the patient you are caring for. A healthy you is a better and a more productive you and your impact on those who you care about is greater when you are healthy and in the right frame of mind. |
