I will be working with Matthew 25 to help raise donations through iDonate.com. This website will help raise money for Matthew 25, and it does that by accepting non-cash donations and auctions them for the organization. Martrell and I will be working with Matthew 25 to establish the website as well as marketing the idea of using idonate.com for Matthew 25. This website accepts noncash donations such as: cars, gift cards, jewelry, stocks etc., and it auctions them for the individuals who donate. The money that is earned from the auctions is then donated to the organization of choice. iDonate.com keeps a certain percentage of the money depending on what the item is. I’m excited to be working on this project because I would like to see what changes it will bring to the clinic. I do not have a background in marketing or advertising but I am still very excited to be working on this project, because I would like to see how many lives we can impact by the donations raised by this project.

I finally got to meet with Dr. McMahan today to discuss about my project. She is a very pleasant person to talk to and I am so glad to have this opportunity to work with her. Various ideas and topics were out for discussion and after meeting with a couple people, I decided I would like to work with the Burmese population on diabetes education. This is different from what I originally anticipated, smoking cessation and FQHC 340B, but diabetes is really what sparks my interest and it's something I feel like I would really enjoy doing. I am very fortunate to have so many options for my project. I feel like all the ideas were great and has great potential to make an impact. I hope my project will make a contribution and will make a difference for the community and the public health department.
The issue with diabetes is our refugee population, the Burmese, does not quite know what diabetes is and how to prevent it. With the language and the cultural barrier, it is difficult to communicate effectively with the Burmese population. Our project is to make an educational video that will help educate patient on diabetes. It will be utilize at clinic visit for patient to watch and ask nurse if they have any questions or concerns. Right now I have a lot of brainstorming to do. I need to think of what I want to do and how should I proceed in doing it. I am quite excited about this project because it is something I have never done before and I am curious where this will take me. For now, I can only try my hardest and hope for the best. Now, lets see what this little brain can do. Let the brainstorming begin! =) Kelly An insightful psychologist once shared with me, “You have to meet people where they’re at.” For me, after thinking about the meaning behind that statement, she was very right. It is easy for us to naturally want to push people to make more of themselves or continually strive to be better and then get disappointment if they fail to meet that expectation however; some people lack the skills and abilities needed to accomplish such tasks. It is important for us as healthcare providers to be encouraging of our patients and help them behave their way to success and remember to check our own disappointments at the door if those goals are not met and recognize the challenges they might face. These goals we give patients must be achievable and within the scope of the their abilities. Limitations can impose a great number of challenges such as cognitive and physical limitations, all imaginable types of resource limitations etc. The ways I try to meet people where they are at starts with recognizing their personal limitations and finding ways to connect to them in ways that helps them be more successful.
Last week, I met with the director of SuperShot, one of the grantees of SJCHF who are reapplying for a grant this coming year. SuperShot is a non-profit organization that provides low-cost vaccinations ($8 per vaccine but no one who is unable to pay is turned away) to children in Allen County. Since vaccination is such an important component to prevent disease from occurring and spreading, SuperShot is reasonably concerned when parents refuse certain vaccinations for their children.
The refusal rates for Supershot’s recommended vaccinations have dropped from11.88% in 2011 to 7.14% in 2013 and the hope is that it will decrease even more this year. The most commonly refused vaccines are for: 1) HPV (human papillomavirus), a sexually transmitted disease which can cause genital warts and various cancers (especially cervical cancer), 2) Hepatitis A, an acute infectious liver disease which can cause an array of symptoms such as fever, vomiting, and nausea, and 3.) the flu vaccine. Recently, SuperShot began providing a questionnaire to the parents who refused a vaccine which inquired about their refusal. The choices were:
Understandably, SuperShot figured that fears of developing autism would be a major concern for some parents and that the matter might have a role in at least some of their refusals for vaccinations. Surprisingly, out of the 297 refusals thus far in 2014, not a single parent cited autism as factor on the questionnaire. The most commonly picked option was ‘other’ which included a wide array of reasons that were not suspected (e.g. wanting more research conducted, wants only school required vaccinations). My plan is assist SuperShot decrease their refusal rates for vaccinations, inquire as to why parents are refusing vaccines, and to assist in educating parents about the benefits of vaccinations. I am extremely excited for this project and hope to lean a ton. My project is to help Matthew 25 set up a relationship with iDonate. iDonate is an organization that accepts donations on behalf of nonprofit organizations. iDonate sells donated items, accepts a small fee, then gives the rest of the money to the designated organization. I’m doing this project because I want to help Matthew 25 continue to offer free healthcare services to the residents of Allen County. The more money Matthew 25 receives from various sources, the more people they can help. As a future healthcare professional, it’s important to me to know that people are receiving the healthcare services they need. Matthew 25’s Development Director said that a lot of people want to give to Matthew 25, but they were not able to donate financially. This is where iDonate comes into play. That person may have an item of value that they no longer need, they can donate that item to iDonate, iDonate would sell that item and give the profits to Matthew 25. Some great features about iDonate are the multitude of ways in which someone can donate. They accept credit card donations, noncash donations, echeck donations, recurring donations, PayPal integration, and mobile giving. Doing this project is not only an opportunity to help out Matthew 25; it’s also an opportunity to expand my skill sets.
