During my first two weeks at SJCHF, I have learned how their grant process works and gained quite a bit of insight into the organizations they work with. I was given the opportunity to look through the majority of the applications from last year from organizations that are expected to resubmit an application this year. The purpose of this was to find one or two organizations where I might be able to contribute my efforts and collaborate on a project with them. So far, I have narrowed my search down to four organizations I would like to potentially work with and will have the opportunity to do a sight visit and meet with the individuals involved with these non-profit groups. I am very excited to begin this adventure and am very hopeful that I can be of some assistance to these fantastic organizations. Once I am certain of the path I am taking in regards to my project, I will have much more to discuss.
The Saint Joseph Community Health Foundation (SJCHF) is faith-based organization that awards a series of annual grants to other non-profit groups or agencies that provide mental, physical, or spiritual health services to the poor and underserved of Allen County. SJCHF is sponsored by the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ and was established in 1998 with funds from the sale of the St. Joseph Medical Center. Proceeds from SJCHF’s endowment are annually redistributed as grants, which can range from $5,000 to $35,000 per grant, that amount up to a total of around $1.3-million each year. To be eligible for a grant, groups or organizations applying must be not-for-profit and demonstrate that at least 51% of the clients they serve are very low income.

After visiting Matthew 25 and observing their operations, I have a better understanding of the organization. Matthew 25 is an organization that actually cares about the people they serve. What makes Matthew 25 unique is the abundance of volunteers who give their time to help people who are less fortunate than them. Their volunteers consist of trained healthcare professionals and ordinary citizens. What I observed was a group of people in need being helped by people who seem happy to serve. Matthew 25 serves the Allen County community by offering healthcare services to adults who are uninsured, underinsured, and/or low income. The healthcare services they offer include medical, dental, vision, and prescription. Matthew 25 offers all their services free of charge to the patient, all they ask for is a $5 – $10 donation. Considering that healthcare is a billion dollar industry and we live in a very financially driven society, I think it’s pretty amazing what Matthew 25 does and I am happy that I can contribute, even if it is in a minute way. I’ll end with a quote that I think is relevant, “Helping a person will not necessarily change the world, but it will change the world for that person.”
Martrell Matthew 25 is a clinic that offers free medical, dental, vision, and hearing services to patients who are homeless, low income, uninsured or who are not eligible to receive Medicare or Medicaid. This clinic only provides services to people residing in Allen County. The majority of patients receiving help at Matthew 25 are between the ages of 40 to 60. The clinic does not receive any funds from the government it is managed entirely by gifts from individuals, churches, organizations, corporations as well as grants from different foundations. Along with providing medical, dental, vision, and hearing service, Matthew 25 also has a medication room which dispenses medications to patients who come to the clinic. The clinic purchases some of the medications and some are provided by pharmaceutical companies.
I look forward to working with this organization and I am excited to see what changes I can help bring at Matthew 25 to help better serve the population. Even though I shared most of this for my assignment last week, I thought the class would benefit from the information as well as serve as what I have learned about my site.
Park Center is a private, non-profit facility that provides a variety of mental health services that focus on recovery from mental illness for both adults and children. The staff is comprised of a collaborative health care team that includes doctors, nurses, case managers, social workers, and a pharmacy team. Park Center has both in-patient and out-patient services along with group homes, partnered with a host of services that include addiction counseling, employment services and behavior therapy. Park Center’s mission is “To restore lives. By partnering with consumers, we strive to support and facilitate their journey toward health.” Park Center has years of experience creating relationships in the community and reaching out to provide care and services to an under-served population, those that suffer from mental illnesses. I also learned a lot about patient assistance programs and the different ways Park Center works with manufactures to help get patient specific meds for free. A website they shared with me that I thought would be helpful for those of us that work in retail and have as a resource for our patients is: www.needymeds.org Check it out! Fort Wayne - Allen County Department of Health is a public health organization that mainly serves the low income population. They have a focus on a variety of sexually transmitted diseases, immunization and tuberculosis. They help serve the underserved mainly by providing screening, diagnosis and treatment with an extremely low affordable care. A screening test for STD such as HIV, chlamydia, trichomoniasis, hepatitis A , B and C, along with antibiotic treatment would only cost $30. If labs were provided by outside resources, a treatment visit would then only cost $10 versus the full $30 package deal. By keeping price low and affordable, the clinic is able to see a lot more patients and provide care for this population. The bigger picture of this is by providing affordable care and treatment here, patient would reduce cost by going to the ER for treatment. In addition, by making treatment accessible and affordable, diseases will be controlled and managed within the community.
I am honestly amazed at the kind of services the Allen County Department of Health provides. The next question I have is how can I help. How I can help make the service better? I am looking forward to find out what my project will be entailed of. |
