My project for this class was not as challenging or complex as others, but in the end I do appreciate the project that was given to me as it does help the vulnerable population as a whole in the end. It did just feel like phone call after phone call at first, but knowing the bigger picture of how the word of Matthew 25 would be spread is what makes me happy to have done so. I am glad I was introduced to this organization and I appreciate all the work they do for this community. Ian was happy with the spreadsheets I made after all the phone calls, he can easily see who needs to be sent information kits and who was more interested than others. There was one county that was very enthusiastic and wanted to schedule for us to go talk to them personally, scheduling did not allow us to do so prior to the end of this class but I told Ian I would still be happy to do so in the coming week or two.
Before coming into this class I was aware of the vulnerable patient population but did not fully recognize ways to treat them. This class really opened my eyes as we discussed certain topics such as adherence, children and elderly patients, immigrants, and many others. I became more aware of how to treat patients and think before talking to these patients. It is easy to assume based on your conscious or unconscious biases, but this class showed me how to look past those and assess the situation before making an assumption. I work in a vulnerable part of town and see many of these scenarios on the regular basis but even then I believe that no one will ever be perfect in treating these patients. I believe awareness and patience is what will make you a great provider in the end. -Fernie The project at the Park Center this semester has been a roller coaster ride. There were points during the project where I thought to myself, "am I even going to have something to turn in at the end of the semester?" Dr. Williams provided me with lots of patient experience to have a better idea of what kind of patient population the Park Center was serving. I haven't had much experience with what is consider the underserved or vulnerable population, so I wasn't really sure what to expect. This semester has taught me a lot about who underserved/vulnerable patients are and things to consider when treating this patient population. I think that my mindset has been broadened to consider more variables affecting these situations that will help me in the future when talking to patients. I am very thankful for the time I was able to spend at the Park Center with Dr. Williams and the other physicians who practice there. My project has come to an end, however, I am hoping that it can be picked up and continued and made better by a future student. - Kadie We went over our database rough draft in our most recent visit to St. Joseph. They recommended some changes to us and we talked about what else could be useful in the database that wasn't included yet. They gave us their interpreters and translators list, so now all that's left is to input it into our database and meet up again next week to show them what the final product looks like.
- Kevin I have completed my research for United Way of Allen County. My last piece that was missing was crime rates for Fort Wayne and Allen County. I have emailed it to Ruthie and Tiffany. Now I am working on my Reflection to add into the PowerPoint Presentation Dihn and I are working on which we will be presenting on November 3rd Thursday. I need to reflect on what I learned and how this experience has made better understand the Vulnerable and Underserved population.
