I have the privilege of partnering with Matthew 25 Health and Dental Clinic which is the only full-time clinic in Allen County offering free medical, dental, vision, and hearing services all under one roof. They began as small clinic in 1976 on Clay street in downtown Fort Wayne after the words of the the Apostle Matthew inspired a small prayer group and Father Tom O'Connor to live out the words of Jesus Christ. Through determination and generosity the clinic has continued to grow over the years.
- 1979: Addition of Dental Clinic
- 1985: Move and Expanded to current location on Jefferson Blvd
- 1994: Expanded from 2,700 to 8,300 square feet
- 2006: 2.9 million dollar remodel
- 2007: Addition of Eye Clinic
Matthew 25 now serves over 115 patients daily with over 400 healthcare and lay volunteers. The patient population consists of those uninsured (about 11% of Allen County adults uninsured as of 2014) and ineligible for Medicaid and Medicare. All are low-income; some homeless; but majority have jobs. Graciously, as a fully non-for-profit organization, Matthew 25 offers medical visits for only a $5 copay and dental visits for $10.
Mission:
- We are inspired by the Gospel to provide free primary healthcare services to uninsured, low-income residents of Allen County. “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me… I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.” – Matthew 25:35-37, 40 (NIV)
I work under the guidance of Ermina Musteldanagic who is the Development Director at the organization. Right now we are working on developing fund raising and donations to cover losses experienced after the initiation the ACA and increase community needs. One of the biggest needs is for DM drugs and testing supplies and therefore is the main focus of our project. We also will be investigating the needs of a patient counseling room that will be added during a future renovation of the facility.
